The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in China, in partnership with Making Space, is pleased to invite proposals from Netherlands-based artists and cultural practitioners for a six-week residency in Guangzhou, China, in Spring 2027. One resident will be selected by Making Space through this fully open call.
Making Space was established in 2017 in Guangzhou, run by artists and curators, and focuses on art and social practice, with a particular emphasis on long-term research, local knowledge, and care-driven collaboration. Through residencies, exhibitions, workshops, field research, publications, translations, and public programmes, Making Space supports practices that respond closely to the social and cultural conditions in which they take place.
The residency is process-oriented and offers a supported working environment that encourages transdisciplinary collaboration with artists, researchers, and activists. While residents are encouraged to share their process through at least one public event during the programme, there is no formal obligation to produce or exhibit finalised work.
China and the Netherlands have a long tradition of inspiring one another through art, culture and creativity. Over the past decades, artists in China and the Netherlands have collaborated on groundbreaking exhibitions, performances, residencies, festivals and research projects. These exchanges have sparked new ideas, challenged perspectives and built lasting professional and personal connections.
Today, this cultural dialogue is stronger than ever. Supported by the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on Culture, both countries are committed to expanding opportunities for exchange, co-creation and long-term collaboration. As we approach the 55th anniversary of diplomatic bilateral relations in 2027, a new generation of partnerships is taking shape. Under the core message “Designing Shared Futures,” the coming years offer exciting opportunities for cultural professionals in the Netherlands to engage with China's vibrant cultural landscape, develop new work together and contribute to addressing shared challenges through the power of culture.
